Arik Levy: Art, published as a sister volume to a forthcoming book on Levy's design, encompasses the last ten years of the Israeli born, Paris-based, practitioners output. Artist, technician, photographer, designer and filmmaker, Levy's skills and indeed outlook are entirely multidisciplinary, whilst his work can be seen in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide. Influenced by Arte Povera, he is comparable to Anish Kapoor and Jeff Koons in sharing an exploration of advance manufacturing processes within his work, often taking the form of highly polished metal structures. Yet Levy is distinctly committed to an ideology of nature and natural materials despite his working with the constraints of industrial forms and manufacturing processes. Indeed he considers himself more of a 'feeling' artist, this tactile association with nature fostered perhaps by his background and time spent in different corners of the globe, musing that ?the world is about people, not objects'. To that extent, perhaps his harmonious approach disseminates his interest in the difficulties of categorisation within areas of the arts, where objects, critiqued in often abstract terms, as being either ?design? or ?art? are judged differently in terms of value, both financial and critical. In part this argument is discussed in the separation of his work into two volumes, with the second, companion volume Arik Levy: Design, being published next season. For Levy, the world is an aesthetic playground without such rules, ?a system of signs and symbols, where nothing is quite as it seems'.

Out There gives an overview of Arik Levy's outdoor creations. Concerned with manufacturing processes and industrial forms, Levy’s works are informed by the materials he adopts, some of these taking shape as highly polished metal sculptures, and outdoor rock works with shooting shards of metal. The constraints of these industrial forms in relation to the 'ideology of nature” and natural materials opens another line of investigation permeating his practice.

Focus groups are all kinds of designers of the product, furniture, interior, fashion, textile, communications, graphics, and computational design areas. The authors Joachim Kobuss, Alexander Bretz and Arian Hassani explain the legal framework and the possibilities to act in that field from a completely new point of view. The law and its effects on the individual designer are described in the context of designers’ everyday practice. Here, the legal aspects of design do not appear in incomprehensible legalese but are rather shown as a strategic instrument for designers which can be fun to handle. All topics are discussed from an international and general viewpoint – due to the increasing globalization in the design fields.

New in Paperback! Furniture design is a complex art. Traditionally, techniques of the craft have been passed down from master to apprentice, but these days that is less and less the case in contemporary design. Students are now required to take courses and figure out much of it themselves. This book, as with others in the Design Secrets series, takes readers into the studio and reveals tips and techniques as well as the inspiration that brought the concept to life. Many graphic and product designers are crossing into furniture design, including Karim Rashid, a designer of product, space, light, and fashion, and Todd Oldham, a photographer, graphic designer, product designer, interior designer, and influence in film/video and TV. Oldham is now the star designer at Lazy Boy-a company that has experienced a remarkable rebirth and revamp. Design Secrets: Furniture shadows similar success stories by showcasing award-winning furniture designs from around the world. Each profile is complete with sketches, notes, and interim iterations revealing how the final piece came to be.

Each stand is presented on two to four pages with an explanatory text about the design and technical information provided to help further explain the design process from concept to execution. This book presents a wealth of contemporary design products and prototypes from all over the world that address the issues of protection and security in our everyday lives. The objects are as diverse as our notions of safety and well-being: headgear designed to withstand either a fall from a bicycle or the blast of a bomb; prefabricated shelters for victims of earthquakes; self-defense and antitheft objects; clearly illustrated emergency instructions; de-mining equipment; and toys that help people with mental disabilities gain and maintain a sense of balance and identity. This broad array of examples is accompanied by texts on the home as a safety nest, on automotive safety, on new materials and technologies, and on how architects and designers can provide support and guidance in situations of extreme emergency.
