Arcadia is the home of several hundred wild (and beautiful) peacocks. They roam freely in the neighborhood around the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Garden (known locally just as The Arboretum).

How did these magnificent birds end up in Arcadia? It actually dates all the way back to the 1880’s. Legend has it that Elias “Lucky” Baldwin, the founder of Arcadia, brought some of the colorful birds back with him from a trip to India. The birds are actually pretty good at surviving in the wild. Today’s birds seen walking down the streets and in front yards, are all descendants of the peafowl brought back by Baldwin 135 years ago.

For the residents of Arcadia, the peacocks are a wonderful and colorful attraction, and just one more thing that makes living in this area so special.
